The Splash Into Summer Giveaway Hop!

As I write this, I'm so sunburned that I can barely move. Even typing makes my knees sting! However, in spite of the pain, I have a couple of reasons to be chipper! The first reason is that sunburn means Summer! Woop!

You see, I have a LOT in common with this little fella:

I require a certain amount of solar power in order to function. This can sometimes be difficult in Wales, so when we get sunny days I have to make the most of 'em!

The second reason for my chipperness is that IT'S GIVEAWAY TIME AGAIN! Yay!

The Splash Into Summer Giveaway Hop is hosted by I Am A Reader, Not A Writer and Page Turners Blog. Check them out!

All you have to do to enter is fill in the simple li'l Rafflecopter form below!
Good Luck!

GIVEAWAY AND INTERVIEW with special guest, Karly Kirkpatrick!

Scattered Figments welcomes Karly Kirkpatrick, author of The Green

Karly Kirkpatrick
Hi there Karly! Thanks so much for stopping by! I loved The Green and am so excited to be able to giveaway a free prize copy to one lucky winner! First of all, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Karly Kirkpatrick, I write books, I love to read, I'm a big movie fan, I love to travel, I speak German and French, I have a 5 year old daughter, and a very nice husband. And I live near Chicago, smack-dab in the middle of the US.

What inspired you to write about a young girl with a promising academic future, who also happens to be a drug dealer?

Someone quite close to me had people in the family that dealt drugs, yet this person was a very good student, participated in sports, etc. and is/was a very law-abiding and straight-laced person. I always find that to be an interesting combination, the stark difference between the choices people make, even when they're in the same family.

A few years ago, I had a student who was the biggest overachiever I had ever met. Very smart and cool, but wanted to be in EVERY club at school. And she was! It was insane. So I thought to myself, what if I took a girl like her and put her in the situation I had come to learn about. And what if she had to do the unthinkable, sell drugs herself, but not because she wanted to, because she had to keep up her image for her future?

What books have influenced you most?

Oh, the Harry Potter series, for sure! I have read so many books in my life, but those influenced me in so many different ways.

What book are you reading now?

I'm re-reading The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and I just started Glimpse by Stacey Wallace Benefiel.

What do you do when you are not writing?

I'm usually running my daughter to soccer or Irish dance practice, watching my favorite shows (like The Vampire Diaries), going to the movies, or hanging out with friends. I also work full-time as a teacher, so it's a delicate balance.

Can you describe how you write?

I actually have a Harry Potter room that I write in, but I also write at my desk at work at lunch, or on the couch, or in bed, or at the kitchen table, or wherever! I usually use notes these days in order to stay efficient. And I often listen to Spotify. Lately, it's been the same three albums. Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, Ellie Goulding's Lights, and Mumford and Sons.

And now,  just for chuckles, a quickfire quiz!

Sweet or savoury? - Sweet!
Beach or Countryside? - Beach!
Comedy or Horror? - Comedy!
Late sleeper or early riser? - Late sleeper!
Wild night out or quiet night in? - Quiet night in!
Winter or Summer? - Summer!

Thank you so much for stopping by, and extra thanks for offering a copy of your book up for grabs!

The Green

Publisher:  DarkSide Publishing
Release Date: January 15th 2012

Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Ariceli Pisa is a senior at the prestigious Cambridge High School and has her sights set on Northwestern University. She's a cheerleader, a member of the National Honor Society, and a drug dealer.

That’s the secret she has to keep from her best friend Naomi, in addition to the fact that she’s madly in love with Naomi’s ex-boyfriend.

Trying to balance her life at Cambridge High with her new demanding job keeps her teetering on the edge of disaster.

Mini-Review

I get a lot of review requests in my inbox. I try to accept as many as I can but that often means that my TBR pile grows much faster than I can tackle it! It takes a little something special for a new addition to my TBR pile to leave the list almost as soon as it arrives there. Karly Kirkpatrick's The Green had just that.

Just read that blurb! How could anyone read that and not want to know more? I read this on my iPhone Kindle app and it only took me an evening. It was a quick and engaging read which is going to be a perfect eBook for the coming summer months when you're lounging on a beach somewhere, wanting a good story which isn't flimsy, but which also isn't going to give you a headache by being too challenging.

Ari, the first person narrator, was prone to speaking like a teenager might on Facebook, she had a thing for her best friend's guy and also used more than one exclamation mark at a time: all decidedly dislikeable traits! And yet she had gumption too. She was flawed, but show me a person who isn't. Show me a teenager who isn't and I'll double your money! No offence teens, but life's a learning curve and your part is steep.

Overall, a fantastic read which had me hooked. I'm so thrilled to be able to share a copy with one lucky winner, thanks to Karly's generous offer of a giveaway!

Karly is the writer of three YA books and one book of short stories. Click on the covers to see the Goodreads page for each!

WINNER of the Charity Hopping Around The World Giveaway!

Well the Charity Hopping Around The World Giveaway has drawn to a close. I'm thrilled that I got to spread the word about Amazing Archie to the 576 people who entered!

The lucky winner of a book of her choice is:

Entrant 272:

Sue Brandes!

A huge thanks to everybody for entering. Even thought the competition is over, Archie still needs all the support you can give so be sure to follow him on Twitter. It was interesting that so many of you had never heard of Tay-Sachs before. I hadn't either until Matthew started spreading the word about his brave nephew. That's why charity hops like this are so wonderful; they help raise awareness about causes that, otherwise, get a bit lost under the rug!

Don't feel sad if you missed out on the prize this time. My next giveaway has already started and you can enter it HERE so you have another chance to win!

NOTE: Sue has been informed of her awesome victory. If she does not get back to me to claim her prize in 48 hours, then another winner shall be chosen.

GIVEAWAY - Charity Hopping Around The World

Another fabulous hop hosted by I am a Reader, Not a Writer, Reading Away The Days and Reading A Little Bit Of Everything. Check out their sites to enter more giveaways with more fabulous prizes! Here on Scattered Figments I'm offering a BOOK OF YOUR CHOICE from The Book Depository. All you have to do is fill in the Rafflecopter form at the bottom of this page (Click here if you can't see it). But first...

Today I'm handing over the metaphorical mic to Matthew, a friend of mine who has an important fundraising venture to share with you! Here's Matthew's message about Amazing Archie.

AMAZING ARCHIE
Just prior to Christmas my sister, Lauren, and brother-in-law, Brad, were given the sort of news that any parent would have nightmares about. Their son, Archie Watson, was diagnosed with a terminal and, at the moment, incurable disease. Tay-Sachs Disease is a disease whereby relentless deterioration of mental and physical abilities that commences around six months old. It usually results in death of infants by the age of four.
For Lauren and Brad and, indeed, their entire circle of family and friends, this news shattered Christmas but credit must be given to the strength showed by Archie's parents. To use Brad's words, they quickly vowed to make the most of life and refused to just 'pull shut the curtains' and let this beat them. Doctors had let them know that their beautiful boy wouldn't be with them for as long as they, or he, deserved but they were determined to make his time a vastly enjoyable experience.
They felt it important to focus their energies on more positive activities. To do this, they began raising money for charities associated with raising awareness of and finding a cure for Tay-Sachs. They made contact with the people who manage the CATS (Cure and Action for Tay Sachs) charity and made arrangements to raise money for their cause. Their social circle all decided to help out too and several people, Archie's uncles, aunt, cousins, friends, all decided to run the St. David's Day 10k. This particular event raised over £3500 for CATS and also enabled many unfit young men and women run further than they've ever run before!
The next event that they've organised is the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge. This is where many family and friends will tackle three of Wales' highest peaks. This time everyone is raising money for Enable, a chairty that runs a children's centre that Archie attends. At this centre Archie is able to observe sensory toys and playthings which is clear to see he enjoys! It's equally important, for Lauren and Brad, that money is raised for Enable as they're a magnificent charity that cater for children with experiencing all different kinds of conditions. They work really hard to ensure that every child's life is as fulfilling as it can be.
This October will see the Men's Health Survival of the Fittest and the Half Marathon reach Cardiff, separated by only one week. Again, friends and family spotted an opportunity to raise money for Archie's causes with some people engaging in the Survival and others the Half Marathon. Some, more stupidly brave (or bravely stupid!) are going to do both events in the one week! This time the recipients of money raised will be Ty-Hafan. Ty Hafan is a charity in Wales that offers 'comfort, care and support to life-limited children and young people,' and is a charity very close to Lauren and Brad's heart.

These events need all the exposure and support they deserve so, if you've a spare minute please follow Archie on Twitter or 'like' him on Facebook
