Top Three: Stories which kept you up at night, scared to turn out the light.

I've been a big fan of the horror genre since I was a kid. I've always loved the scary stuff, whether it be in the form of books, film, camp-fire stories or (these days) video games.

With this post I'm hoping someone will be able to recommend a truly terrifying story. Anything which is really creepy would be great!

Here are my TOP THREE scary stories.

1. Dead Space.

Okay...so it's a video game, but watching my husband play this actually gave me nightmares! The visual effects were creepy enough but it was actually the sound effects which freaked me out the most. The audio to this game is bloody terrifying. It's a great game to play/watch and left me truly spooked.

2. Poltergeist.

My mum had to stay up all night when she read this book because it scared her so much. The film is pretty creepy too, and a damned good watch to boot. It's another example of the effectiveness of a haunting soundtrack. However, it wasn't the film or the book version of this story which gave me nightmares, even though I must have seen it for the first time when I was about 10 years old.

The fact that my lovely Papa-Bear decided to tell me the story of Poltergeist (specifically the bit about the guy who rips his own face off) as a "funny story" one night when I was even younger than 10, was what gave me the nightmares. Thanks, dad!

3. The Entity.

Plenty of people (despite what they might claim) might get spooked in the night because of fears of the ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged-beasties in their closet. But surely, beyond that, every woman has that innate, primal fear of rape. The Entity is a story (supposedly based on true events) which taps into the horror of both of these fears.

Nick won't even watch this film because it creeps him out so much. It's a truly scary movie and Barbara Hershey is amazing in it. You sympathize when her sanity is called into question, and you feel sick with horror as you watch her abuse unfold. This one isn't for the light-hearted, but it's perfect for those who have a morbid fascination with the horror genre (like me!).

SO! What are the stories which made your blood run cold? Let me know in the comments, lovely blog followers! Scare me. If you can. Mwahahahahahaha!

  1. Children of the Dust, read this for English at school and it was so bleak, it opened up the world of nuclear destruction which until then wasn't in our face. Terrified me. They Thirst, a great vampire yarn which always left me struggling for sleep after reading it. As a film Session 9 makes me scared, when one of the characters finds old tapes of mental patients treatments and listens to them, the changing voices are chilling!
